Tower Bridge, one of the iconic images of London, is found next to the Tower of London from which it gets its name. The bridge, which has a lifting centre section to allow the passage of larger vessels, was completed in 1894 and is a masterpiece of Victorian engineering.
The bridge has been privy to a number of dramatic situations. In 1952 a double decker bus had started to cross the bridge as it began to raise. The driver accelerated and clearing a 3 ft gap dropped 6 ft onto the other side of the bridge. Aircraft have been flown under the bridge on two occasions. One was an RAF Hawker Hunter jet. Neither act was officially sanctioned.
The bridge lifts to allow traffic to pass on the river below on a fairly regular basis.
