Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska was a Polish Roman Catholic nun who claimed to receive visions of Jesus Christ. Her visions inspired the devotion of the Divine Mercy.
Divine Mercy Sanctuary is a Roman Catholic basilica dedicated to and the final resting place of Saint Faustina.
The Sanctuary was originally the site of a 19th century monastery complex. In 1966 the remains of Sister Faustina were moved to the church. 2 years later, Cardinal Karol Wojtyła, later to become Pope John Paul II, designated the church as a shrine to Sister Faustina.
In 1981, the miracle that led to Sister Faustina's ascension to sainthood was described by an American suffering from lymphedema. With three subsequent papal visits and millions of visits from pilgrims, a new shrine was built in 1999. The modern building houses chapels, restaurants and a tower with a fine view over Krakow.
