The Bloemenmarkt is described as a floating flower market. It is a remnant of the days when fresh cut flowers were transported to Amsterdam daily, by barge.
Nowadays, it is something entirely different. Outside of the Tulip season which extends from the end of March to the middle of May, if you are expecting a market full of fresh flowers, you will be disappointed.
Apart from a couple of shops selling fresh cut flowers, most of the stalls on the Bloemenmarkt sell either bulbs and seeds or the kind of tourist souvenirs you will find everywhere in Amsterdam. The vast majority of the tulips you will see are made of wood.
If you do decide to buy tulip bulbs or other seeds to take home, please ensure that you are able to legally import them into your home country.
