Horse Guards Parade

Changing of the Guard

Horse Guards in Whitehall, the headqurters of the British army during the Napoleonic Wars, is now the official entrance to both St James Palace and Buckingham Palace. As such a guard is posted and has been posted continuously since the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.

Between 10 am and 4 pm, the guard is mounted on horseback and on foot. The guardsmen change every hour, on the hour.

The more involved ceremony of the Changing of the Guard, takes place at 11.00 am (10.00 am on Sunday) and lasts approximately 45 minutes. If you like horses, this is a must do activity.

A similar guard mounting ceremony takes place at Buckingham Palace at 11.30am and lasts approximately 45 minutes. This guard change is often accompanied by a military marching band.
