Formally known as the Basilica and Expiatory Church of the Holy Family, La Sagrada Familia is a large unfinished Roman Catholic church. Designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, work began in 1882. The building is now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The building was consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI in November 2010 and proclaimed it a minor basilica.
It cannot be described as a cathedral, which must be the seat of a bishop.
At the time of Gaudi's death in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete.
The building has been constructed using private donations. To say that progress has been slow is a considerable understatement. It is hoped that the building can be completed by 2026 which is the centenary of Gaudí's death.
