St Mary's Basilica is a large brick built church sited next to the main market square in Krakow.
Founded in 1221 and rebuilt in the 14th century the building has twin towers 80 metres tall and a famous altar by Veit Stoss.
A trumpet call is sounded on the hour from the tower of the basilica. The Hejnał mariacki breaks off mid stream to commemorate the 13th century trumpeter who was shot in the throat while sounding the alarm to warn of a Mongol attack. The midday hejnal is broadcast live across Poland on Polish National Radio.
A stunning view of the main square from the tower of the basilica makes the effort to reach the top worthwhile.
