Wawel castle was built in the 14th century as a royal residence. It is an extremely important historic and cultural site and symbol of the Polish state. Used for hundreds of years by the kings of Poland the building was eventually occupied by the Polish president following World War I. After World War II, the castle was designated as a museum.
Visitors may tour the Royal Apartments, the State Rooms and the Crown Treasury. The Treasury contains a number of valuable historic artefacts, the most precious of which is Szczerbiec, the state coronation sword.
The castle has an extensive collection of paintings, ceramics, sculpture and other artefacts.
