The Wieliczka Salt Mine has produced salt continuosly from the 13th century until 2007. The mine is over 300 metres deep, has over 280 kilometres of tunnels, four chapels, an underground lake and numerous statues carved out of the rock salt.
Visitors to the mine may take a number of more or less adventurous trips underground. The standard tourist route is a 3.5 km walk through the underground caverns.
During the Nazi occupation, an underground factory was set up in the mine, although production never began due to the arrival of advancing Russian forces.
The mine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
