Not an exotic new flavour of Italian ice cream but the essential, waterborne public transport system that operates throughout Venice and surroundings areas.
All transport within Venice involves walking or getting some kind of boat. If you don't have your own boat, your choice is between a water bus or vaparetto and a water taxi.
Vaporettos, or more correctly, vaporetti operate a 24 hour service in and around the lagoon, Grand Canal and outlying areas. They run on well defined routes stopping at pontoons moored at strategic points, just like a traditional bus service.
Tickets are available from ticket booths and from ticket machines. A standard ticket allows unlimited travel for one journey with a time limit of 75 minutes. Single day and multi day passes are also available.
